Nevertheless, the pioneers like Lewis, Clark and Boone were taking on very serious projects; venturing on foot or horseback into unknown country.
I don't how long it took to cross the continent even after the routes had been established by various explorers; generally uphill for much of the way Westwards. They must have been very unpleasant, mainly dreary but always hazardous journeys though, and I understand there were many graves along those old trade-routes.
