Has anyone been to Ghent?

I'm looking into the possibility of spending a weekend in Ghent sometime next year. The plan is to take the Eurostar from London. My wife isn't very mobile, so I am looking at giving her a relaxing break where she can sit and enjoy the views.

It’s quite lovely but won’t take long for you to walk around.

Did a Eurostar break to Brussels.
Hotel just round the corner from the Grand Place.
Easy walking; Moules/frites in a café.

Can recommend it.

Gorgeous venue, but as I recall, it maybe a bit tough to manage getting around for someone with mobility trouble.

@samueltyler2 she can walk but only in short bursts.

@Jacko1971 i believe it is a world hetitage site. We were there in April. Very nice town. If course we only did the usual tourist sites.

Do a search is ghent mobility friendly and see what you think.

Yes it is a lovely place with great shopping. However it is paved with uneven cobblestones. So make sure your wife wears suitable shoes.

@meggie cobbles could be an issue. It's definitely something to think about.

@Jacko1971 most of the main places there like Bruges have cobbled streets. It does slow things down if you have arthritus like myself.
@meggie the advantage of Bruges is, you can see a very big stretch of the city sightseeing by boat. I am not sure if that is possible in Ghent
Edit, just checked, and you can take a 'rondvaart' in Ghent too.

We will have been together 20 years next June. It's been a few years since we went abroad. I thought it would be nice to go somewhere a bit special. It would probably be cheaper to fly but airports are too much of a hassle. We can leave the car at the railway station or even take the bus if we want to walk to the end of the street.

My initial thought was Bruges. I particularly like the idea of sitting at waterside cafés. Dola AI suggested that Ghent would be less busy than Bruges.

I am open to other ideas. I only thought about it earlier today.

@Jacko1971 both are fabulous. In the historic areas the cobblestones are rough on mobility.

It's looking less inviting the more I look into it. It is adding up to more than I wanted to pay especially if I can't guarantee the weather.
