Have you ever tried meditation? You focus only on trying to slow your breathing. You can also pick a word to focus on, saying it in your mind over and over. I usually pick a serene word like, "relax".

I've never had that particular impediment to sleep, but when something bad has happened I can sometimes read myself to sleep with something escapist like Harry Potter or a sci fi book.
