HellsBelle Damnit I wrote a long post and lost it, trying again.
So Canada is a resource extraction scam. A country has basically been created in order to put a sovereign wrapping around the mass mining and oil production operations that define the nation's economy. We don't build things, we have very little in the way of cultural exports, we don't have Canadian food (outside of Quebec and maritimes), we aren't like... a people.
75% of all mining companies in the world are in Canada. 90% of Canadian land is owned by the government or corporate interests for resource extraction. Money in Canada that isn't tied up in resource extraction is instead tied up in real estate development which has made Vancouver and Toronto completely unaffordable. These resource companies do HORRIFIC things overseas wherever they can, which has included use of slave labour - and I mean full on slaves.
And that brings us to treatment of Indigenous people. This is, allegedly, -their- land. We have treaties signed and everything. We do land declarations about how they are the traditional caretakers of this land and then steal resources from them, deny them running water, and leave them to die. The racism they suffer is horrific and ongoing - I'm a union rep in a freaking university and both of my harassment cases are over anti-Indigenous racism.
I love my community and this little region of central Alberta I'm from, but Canada as a nation? We suck.
