So, what"s an assault weapon?

Amazing how no one wants to define what makes a weapon an assault weapon. This is intentional for the obvious reason.

@Heartlander A semi automatic or automatic gun.

@Carazaa Maybe a better idea would be to have a certification process for mental illness and a designated guardian whose legal responsibility would be to assure that his/her charge would not have access to such thinvs as firearms, ammunition, explosives, automobiles, financial transfers, etc. In the event there isn't a family member to step forward to comply with the above, the court would appoint someone.

@Heartlander I don't agree with labeling mentally ill. I agree with the European model that if you want a gun you have to get it from the police station in your town and it takes a few months or a year while a background check is done and all guns are sold at the police station, only for hunters, no one else needs a gun!

AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles are NOT “assault weapons” or “assault rifles.” An assault rifle is fully automatic — a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.

@Carazaa we routinely label people as physically handicapped for the purpose of special treatment. We label the poor, minorities; we lable veterans, special needs children, senior citizens, minors, etc, etc.

A store can be fined for selling cigarettes or alcohol to a minor. There are numerous benefits and responsibilities bestowed based on labels. Why aren't we laying responsibilities on guardians of the mentally ill? In practically every mass shooting of recent times, mental illness was an issue, and there was or should have been a guardian to shield both the charge and the public.

@Heartlander Whatever you call them is not important. And mental illness is not something constant. A person could be fine one day and lose their family, or their job the next and lose their temper. They should not have a gun handy because they are afraid of a burglar because anyone on a bad day can lose their temper and if they have a gun in their home they could do something they regret. Alcoholics and drug addicts are much more violent than mentally ill people. America needs to learn from europe is more effective. It should also be against the law to fire people like in Europe, because that can trigger someone to lose their temper. A request from the police department and a long background check and a long wait period for a very good purpose like hunting etc.

@Carazaa We are all our brother's keepers, so why don't we have general guidelines for what we should do when our brother, sister, parent, child, neighbor, etc shows signs of mental illness. Like remove their access from firearms, take away their car keys, checkbooks, etc. And maybe we should hold guardians responsible for assuring the above. When a person is mentally ill and not responsible for their actions, why are we reluctant to make the guardian then responsible?

@Carazaa

USA isn't Europe or anyplace else
Unless you live here it's hard to understand
The 2nd ammendment to OUR bill of rights allows we the people to possess firearms
We don't need a reason

If you look @ history
Disarming the citizens is one of the first step to taking citizens rights away and horrific things usually happen after
