Yes, if one's memory is continually recalling some mistake or hurt from the past, one must recognize how it came to happen. And then being at peace with ourselves will come from the recognition that we are not the same person now as we were then. Guilt won't be removed doing this, but at least it can pass from our daily thoughts since we have explained to ourselves how it happened and how it won't happen again. If we can really forgive those who have wronged us, we can sincerely forgive ourselves as well.

@sirjames: yes, it passes from daily life and there's peace somewhat, but then at times it also rears up its ugly head and then all it remains is every time guilt comes up, we need to forgive ourselves again and again.
