The person closing themselves off to new people, yes. They are always hurt the most. The second time, their actions hurt them as well though, along with the one trying to get close.

We do adapt, yes.

Hardest adaptation I think is when the person stays there but no longer fills that place. Maybe not most painful, but most difficult.
