I’m happy these days but I feel I’m missing a lot too

My therapist tells me I’m simply prioritizing now — putting things that require my constant immediate focus. The biggest one, of course, being my son Lucas. It made me feel a little better when he told me many new parents have conveyed the same feelings to him and that it’s just a big new adjustment they all go through. I’m told maybe the things I’m missing now are also important to me (plenty are) and it’s not that I feel they no longer are, it’s just that I’m putting what’s most important to me first, as one should. While I am feeling I miss out on a lot now, I really do feel happy being with my baby every day. I love him more than anything… and I suppose there’s my answer to the problem I’m feeling. My therapist also added the perspective that this period of “missing out” I’m feeling is very short in the grand scheme of things; that as Lucas grows up, I’ll have more time to reconnect with things I used to be more attentive to regularly when it’ll be safe and healthy to do so. The mini struggles of being a new mother, I guess.

Enjoy your special time with him, it really does go by so quickly, the days are long but the years are short, my youngest is almost 17, honestly it feels like 5 minutes ago he was dressed up as a bumble bee age 2 for Halloween and now he's dressed as men in black going with his girlfriend to a party

I know it's hard, but do try to realise that you are doing an amazing job and enjoy the little things... Don't stress yourself out about should I be doing xyz, there's no rules, do what is right for you and your family right now

Would taking some time for yourself help? Getting a baby sitter or your spouse to watch the baby where you can have some you time. If I had a young child I would ask my husband/boyfriend for a she shed or something (similar to a man cave) where I won't be far from my baby but I can be in my own little world. I could watch movies, have a spa day, listen to music do whatever I wanted in my own space

@Blaz3 My parents and sister have both looked after Lucas before but I always get a bit of separation anxiety with him after a while. I don’t like being apart from him for long. It’s a bit of a paradox, lol. But I guess that just reinforces what I talked about: despite missing other things, I am still happiest with my baby.

@Ducky lol thats exactly i said a shed or something so that i would be only a few feet away maybe in the backyard or something feeling like i'm on vacation 🤣
I'm so glad you're working through this. And it is a very important job to be a parent.
