@PiperMcLean Okay we’ll start with a few Uruguay is properly the “Oriental Republic of Uruguay” Oriental meaning to the east in this context and this title refers to the Uruguay River in the west meaning the country is east of the river Uruguay (Also fun fact the word orientated comes from the fact that most maps used to be set to the east(or orient) instead of the north like we do today)
Bolivia is the “Plurinational State of Bolivia” which was added to reflect the indigenous people who are not the majority today
Taiwan is the “Republic of China” Because Taiwan is technically the remnants of the historical Chinese government who were forced to retreat to the island of Taiwan after losing a civil war to who is more commonly known today as China(who is the formally “People's Republic of China”)
One that is just completely different is Greece is the “Hellenic Republic”
And probably my favorite just cause it sounds wrong and I’ve never heard anyone ever refer to it as this Mexico is the “United Mexican States”
@JRVanguard aren't you a well educated student, Joshy?
The Taiwan one is interesting because it makes me wonder how much of a country's identity comes from its history versus the government it has today.
But I suppose history has a way of shaping how people understand their own identity, even long after the political circumstances that shaped it have changed.
Did you learn all of this from traveling, or are you just genuinely interested in these things and find yourself reading articles and going down random historical rabbit holes? 😏🤔
