In this economy, would you still work if you don't have to? What job is the happiest one for you?

...But for most of us, I dare say we just keep swimming and swimming, even when what we truly want is to just sleep.

But it's a cute idea. The concepts of happiness and necessity may look contradicting to someone who has to constantly provide...but I'm not putting an end to that. Maybe, just maybe, they can go together. Happiness and responsibilities.

Maybe soon. Some day soon. Some day real soon.

Well, I'm long past needing to or being able to. I retired early, but not because I didn't enjoy the job. I loved the unpredictability, the intellectual challenges, the mentoring of others. But it was stressful and my wife said the stress was going to kill me. Actually, it turned out ideally. The organization kept hiring me as a consultant on specific projects. I had the right to refuse. I made as much working 20 hours a week as I did working 60 hours, and already had my benefits as a retiree.
