Why does everyone you meet automatically presume you're married (or just in a couple) because you're mature age?

I get annoyed because it's presumed you're part of a couple whenever you meet new people just because of how old they think you are and whether you have kids (or not) and similar odd (to me) ways of assessing someone's relationship status without directly asking.

In some advanced for the time literature during XIX century, "astronauts" went to the moon using victorian costumes.
Social related ideas may remain while everything else changes faster.

I´ve got personal anecdotes related to my once status as "single father" that point to almost the same.
