The gaslighting answer you got seems to line up best with this in my opinion. If he was truly interested in you and wanted to be in a mature adult relationship, he would not respond to you in that manner when you are asking him about his feelings or how the relationship is going.

Relationships in my opinion are only worthwhile when there is mutual love, support, and respect. Your partner should make you feel loved and supported. You shouldn’t have to walk on egg shells. You should be able to talk openly about feelings and where the relationship is going. If your relationship is causing you more stress than joy and peace, and your partner isn’t willing to invest in it equally to fix it, it’s best to let them go.

Im thinking there is much more to this then just what we are seeing.
Also, if this is the case, then perhaps you might want to switch with another gender and you might get a better response next time.
