Why would someone create false rumours about another person?

Beware of the so called friends who appear to care for you, whispering things about another person to you. They could just be making all that crap up. Maybe they just enjoy watching you react.

I'm going through this right now at work I just let them do it because it speaks louder on their character and the truth will always come out eventually and that person will be exposed for who they truly are

@DeluxedEdition it is certainly a reflection of someone's character but I would be a little jarred if it happened in my workplace.
