Why would someone create false rumours about another person?

Beware of the so called friends who appear to care for you, whispering things about another person to you. They could just be making all that crap up. Maybe they just enjoy watching you react.

Indeed. There is a motivation behind it, for them doing that and they are the ones who look bad in my eyes.
Although none of my friends here do that.
I know it's been done about me though.
