SIGNS SOMETHINGS WRONG

ppl sometimes ignore the warning signs of a persons cry for help alcoholism' drug addiction and substance abuse self harm and comfort eating can all be signs that someone is suffering their own personal hell sometimes these things can be a form of escape from the turmoil that's happening mentally and in their personal lives there is a lot of stigma and taboo around such issues and mental health in general ppl tend to say that it is just attention seeking or brush such things under the carpet if they ignore it long enough they'll stop it but the problem is it will always be present there in the background until it is addressed and that person receives counselling or professional help mental illness must be addressed ALWAYS if someone says to you they don't feel ok take them seriously get them help and support them there can be many other forms of personal abuse too which can be cries for help

Yes but they can actually sue you. You can't kidnap someone or restrict their freedoms. I think there are no legal ways to make someone go to rehab if they don't want to. There must be thousands of parents who wish they could help their addicted adult kids but they are helpless.

@CrazyMusicLover there's restricting their freedoms and saving their life if someone is becoming a danger to themselves and suicidal their is legal methods with the help of a professional in putting a person into state care which they can be helped and possibly saved some ppl can unknowningly become their own worse enemy especially if they suffer from a dangerous psychosis or PTSD or severe depression coupled with addiction can become paranoid psychotic or even dangerously suicidal and/or homocidal if suffering schizophrenia or psychotic tendancies it's not their fault they need urgent medical attention and mental health help and in cases like that a person can be sectioned in other words the mental ward assumes responsibility of the patient in order to help get them on track again there is a wide range of drugs and anti depressants and anti psychotic drugs and tranquilisers after care to help keep a person sane after they go back into society post recovery all ppl with mental conditions especially severe mental conditions need is understanding care TLC and attention compassion and the help to be available if needed but I do agree it can be tricky but if they prove to be a danger to themselves then help must in some way be sought

@MIDZY198201 Unfortunately, it rarely seems to work like this in reality. I heard about a case where the person who suffered from a severe mental illness asked for help and was turned away because they claimed they didn't have capacity. They put him on a waiting list and in the meantime he murdered his relative. So many times these institutions are unwilling to deal with a problem until something really bad happens, even when someone reaches out for help.

@CrazyMusicLover I do agree I think not enough is really done to help a person or try heal their mind till it is too late in cases what you just mentioned I believe ppl who suffer psychosis should on compassionate grounds go to a mental help facility no charges should be brought against them because ppl have to understand they're not in their right frame of mind when they commit these acts especially given that he asked for help then it is the fault of the state and their failure to do more in offering unlimited help for such ppl they are not monsters only very troubled poor souls if they had the right help and medication they would probably be happier different ppl but so many times the state lets them down not enough money is put into such forms of care either very sad story but proves the failure that is present when dealing with mental health

@CrazyMusicLover more places should be made priority for such ppl and more hospitals and facilities made available proves the states failure in not taking the situation serious enough especially where ppl are begging for help

@CrazyMusicLover Yea. I well remember back in the 70s or 80s when then NYC mayor Ed Koch tried to rescue homeless street and doorway sleepers, cardboard box dwellers, etc. Thought it was an act of compassion, that no one intentionally wanted to live that way.

In the UK a doctor can 'section' a person which means that they can be confined to some kind of institution.
What does sectioning mean?

If you are sectioned, this means that you are kept in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983. There are different types of sections, each with different rules to keep you in hospital. The length of time that you can be kept in hospital depends on which section you are detained under.

What will happen to you once you are sectioned depends on which section you are detained under, your specific mental health problem and need for care and treatment, and your personal circumstances.

I imagine that other countries must have something similar?
MIDZY198201 · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon in Ireland it's the same thing you can be sectioned if the mental health professionals I.E. a psychiatrist or psychologist deems in their opinion you are unfit to look after yourself due to the fact of psychosis or schizophrenia or prone to violent outbursts or self harming then it falls into a mental health problem and urgent help is sought meaning you can be moved to a psychriatic ward and sectioned for a number of weeks sometimes months until they are confident you are recovered enough to return to society then you recieve after care which could be certain therapies or drugs future appointments ect

@Heartlander it was still an act of compassion. Many do not want to live that way.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Handfull1 Oh yes. As I recall, it was one of the messier eras of NYC. Civil rights groups intercepted Koch's efforts on grounds that a cardboard box is someone's home and it was wrong to assume they wanted or needed to be helped.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Heartlander It might well be wrong to assume that they are homeless by choice, some few people are. But that doesn't make it wrong to offer assistance, people can always politely decline an offer.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@ninalanyon It's really a problem that probably most cities have. On one hand the city can't assume that a homeless, street dweller is incapable to decide for themselves whether they want help or want to be left to what we see as their misery. So if a homeless street dweller refuses help, the city has to wait until he/she commits a crime before they have some degree of jurisdiction. It gets pretty complicated when cities are expected to provide sanctuary for the homeless who prefer to live on the streets, but then the temperature drops to below freezing, and cities are then expected to be compassionate and provide shelter.

@Heartlander extremes on all sides! Rarely a good thing!
