When he said "I knew it!" was he reacting to your facial features?

I know a woman, who used to be a neighbor here in Minnesota, whose ancestors come from a town in Italy that was settled by Spaniards. One time she flew to a city in western Canada, and a stranger came up to her at the airport to ask, "Excuse me, is your family from...." (whatever the town is). She was surprised and said yes. He told her that there is a town in Canada populated by people from that town in Italy, and "they all look like you!

How did that woman react when he answered her, and when she saw the two of you engage in conversation?

In the winter especially, my wife can almost pass for a “white girl,” or at the very least a slightly darker skinned European like Italian or some kind of undetermined race. People think she’s not black at all. It’s made for some really uncomfortable situations when some white person unknowingly speaks out their racism against black people to and around us.
