i think they become less of a lie and more of a manipulation tactic as time goes on
being lied to for so long makes it real to me, i remember when my ex told me she didn’t cheat on me the first time and she just lied cos she thought she did and she never understood why it didn’t matter that she didn’t actually do it because she let me believe she did
