I was having a conversation with some family and they found this statement incredibly insulting to my husband but I do not think that the statement is insulting although I do understand that many women have used this particular tagline as as a point of hate toward or contention against men but I wasn't using it in that way. I was told that as a heterosexual woman this statement can never be positive.

To many people when they hear the phrase "I don't need a man " it has echoes of extreme feminist propaganda in the statement and is often said by single moms to indicate that they raised their child perfectly fine alone when in actuality a father is necessary in a child's life. So my family took issue that I as a married woman would utter such a damaging statement in their mind and a statement which indicates to the world that men are no longer needed in society but this is not what I meant.

@REMsleep well said.

@REMsleep I don't think being married matters here - just saying. Bringing a child into the world is (normally) a sign of a bond (or that there was a bond) between two people (being normally a man and a woman) and that saying 'i dont need a man' is more a selfish decision IMHO where the women seperates her own desires and goals from the requirement of shared mutual parenting for their child (or children if there's more than one).
@REMsleep There are still people who think women aren’t of any value unless they have a husband or partner. Feminism is basically the simple idea that that isn’t true, but old ideas die hard. And as stated, “needing” and “wanting” are completely different things.

@bijouxbroussard I don't think like that - to me a woman is of value if she appreciates herself in the context of how she fits into the rest of society and the world in general. That's true Zen. We don't 'need' anything except three things - water, food and shelter. In that order.

@bijouxbroussard I said something along these lines when my brother asked me why black women particularly were so negative towards men saying that he has never heard a man utter the phrase that they don't need a woman.🙄

@zonavar68 Ok I can agree with this statement from you.

@REMsleep i think it has to do with black men generally being so unfaithful. black women are tired of it, and have come to terms with their own power because they are tired of feeling betrayed by the person who is supposed to help make them stronger not tear down their confidence.

@DeluxedEdition I don't like to support negative sterotypes but my culture has some problems. Just like all cultures I might add

@zonavar68 a woman's main purpose is not to bear children for a man 🙄 sorry you and society project that as selfish onto us. imagine being such a selfish species that you impregnante women and leave and go and impregnante more while the women are always left raising the children so that the man can have the audacity to say "you are selfish for not bearing babies"
@REMsleep There are two stereotypes that seem to persist: black men abandoning their families (which wasn’t part of my life experience, so I know better). The number of single black mothers and the stereotype of the “angry black woman” all tie in with that premise.
zonavar68 · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard There are just as many single white women who decide for one reason or another that they hate men. WGTOW etc.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@bijouxbroussard Well in terms of single moms African American women are by far the highest as a percentage in USA so some kind of problem exists and I don't believe in the angry black woman. I believe in a misunderstood and a tired black woman.
But there are some good men from all cultures
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@zonavar68 It is increasingly common among all.
@REMsleep
I don't believe in the angry black woman.
Nobody with any intelligence does. But unfortunately that particular stereotype is one of the many ways racism works against us, even intra-racially, as it’s the excuse some black men have given for looking elsewhere.

Absolutely 🙏@REMsleep

Heartbreaking but you are absolutely right. And society will never see it for what it is. Black women extremely caring and and giving but you can only give so much when all people do is take.
