Why are people proud of me for working in a grocery store?

I’m 24 years old. I work in a grocery store for 5 years now. I have my own car and pay my own bills, do online classes, but still live with my parents. My cousins, aunt, and uncle say they are proud of me for having a job, car, do school and pay my own bills. I feel like any schmuck can get a low paying job, get a car, go to school, and pay their own bills. Why the praise?
You are building a life foundation.

Maybe any schmuck CAN do it, but not every schmuck does.
Because you're doing it. Not everybody is doing all of that.

@missbeez i wouldn’t be working on retail if I thought I was too good for it, but it’s not really an accomplishment to be making just over minimum wage at 24.

Because even that isnt all that common anymore...

Where you at? And are you at all mechanically inclined. I'd hire you if you're willing to work the hours

would you rather be a bum and not have a job sit in the house all day? Come on dude! Be proud of what you’re doing!

Because those are good accomplishments.

@SW-User I don’t see them as accomplishments. It’s just more of survival.

Well at least you're doing something for yourself. You should be proud of yourself.

Because there are less than desirable alternatives.

I have met plenty of people, some much older than you, that are either incapable of or unwilling to do what you are doing. Being responsible doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Be proud of yourself:)

At least you are making progress and you’re not a mooch. It’s OK to live at home if you are working towards goals & earning some money to help support yourself.

Every word you said are the reasons why

Many people work yet can’t afford a car. I know people who struggle with their bills on a regular basis. Acknowledging that you are taking proper care of yourself isn’t a strange thing to hear from a supportive family.

@VulcanGalaxy self worth isn’t an easy journey I know
VulcanGalaxy · 26-30, M
@Mrsbetweenfatandfit I don’t have time to care about self worth. Work is only a means of survival.
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
@VulcanGalaxy self worth happens with everyday tasks really. Sounds to me you’re just making your own mental well being a priority. Life is a lot more than bills, eating & sleeping. I hope you choose to try some of the other neat stuff there is to experience.
