I don't think it should be replaced. It should be eliminated. It made sense before electricity. That's not now. The fact that our elections continue to come down to a a few states that don't exactly represent the entire country is extraordinarily messed up. Particularly when federal decisions impact the entire country.
One person - One vote. That's as close to a real democracy as we can get.

@Ynotisay yeah but most of those votes would still come from just a few states, the most densely populated ones. The electoral college strives to even the field and keep things fair

@SW-User But how is that fair? People who live in densely populated areas are under the same roof when it comes to federal decisions. Why should a farmers in Wisconsin dictate what happens in New York City?
Those states are equally represented in Congress. Actually, they're overly represented given the population of some States.
My take is that fair is one person one vote when it comes to federal policies that impact all.
