What would you do if your partner was caring for your pet and the pet got hurt?

When my ex and I were together he had a time when he left the house at 5am for work to travel a couple hours away. One morning he forgot something and came in through the back. I got up and we talked for a few minutes and he left out the front door. He had left the gate open and the dog had a doggie door and left out through the open gate.
I called a friend who's husband worked with my husband and told her I had to cancel our plans as the dog was gone and I had to find him. Later that afternoon she called me back to ask if I found the dog as her husband had called her at my husband's request. My husband said I will be forgiven for most anything EXCEPT losing the dog. I would be that upset. I can relate to you.
