How do you feel about the "N" word?

I came to this country (U.S.A) from West Africa when I was like 8 yrs old. I am now 30. Ever since I've been living here, I've heard Blacks refer to each other as the N-word. I could never understood why considering the origins of the word. How ever when someone of another race uses it, it then becomes offensive to the point that they are ready to beat up the person. Why should the meaning of a word change depending on who says it. Whatever happened to us calling each other Brother, Bro or even Homie. Now a days the word is so overused I hear people from all nationalities using it. Many races have been referred to by derogatory words, however you don't see them using different variations of that word towards each other. Personally I feel like if we want other races to stop using it, we have to stop using it ourselves.
One day we heard if we tear down all the Civil War statues...that will help end racism and discrimination. How did that work out?

Then we hear it's the "N" word. If we could just stop white people from saying that word....boy I bet that would help. But the blacks actually use it more than whites do. Ever listen to rap??

The thing is.........it's not statues.....or words.......it's attitudes. Saying a word or not saying a word won't end racism. Seeing a statue or just the base it used to stand on won't end it.

The idea of discrimination is actually uphelp with the N word. Whites know it aggravates blacks to hear it so they use the word to cause problems..intentionally. And blacks actually discriminate against whites by saying our race can say that but yours can't---which ironically is the definition of discrimination. So in protesting against discrimination--blacks actually are guilty of discriminating themselves by saying one race can do this--but yours can't...and that pisses whites off So BOTH races keep the racism pot stirred over...............a word.

Getting rid of the N word or making issue out of who can use it and who can't won't solve racism anymore than tearing down statues did. It's attitude.

@anythingoes477 I agree with you for the most the part. Well said.
I just feel as blacks if we don't like others using it, we should stop it ourselves.

I don't like it and don't see why it has any place in society. The word has such ugly connotations that I think it should be buried other than when learning about the past and how to avoid it being the future. I don't think that it needs to be, or should be, reclaimed.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User I completely agree, well said

people who claim to be "offended" by words tend to have a lot of double standards, especially in politics...

kydflash · 31-35, M
@wildbill83 I feel in this case it's different considering the history of the word.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@wildbill83 I disagree with what he said. Some words hold a lot more weight due to it's historical nature than others.
SW-User
Words are just a bunch of vibrations. People need to realize it's the context in which a word is used that makes it good or bad.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User I understand what your saying, well said. But if a white person is using it the same way we use it towards each, we still see it as wrong. Which shows we still find it offensive. Not sure if I make sense.
SW-User
@kydflash I know what you mean. I'm white, though I've never said it to avoid drama. Makes no sense tbh.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User I agree
Quizzical · 46-50, M
I thought the origin of the word was Spanish for black which over time became bastardised

@SW-User Yes, from which the 'other' word evolved
missionfigdeluxe · 61-69, M
I’ve never liked it
kydflash · 31-35, M
@missionfigdeluxe Same here, I get offended when other Black people call me it.
missionfigdeluxe · 61-69, M
I’m sure it does , I’m white and from the Deep South USA and it makes me cringe when I hear it.@kydflash
kydflash · 31-35, M
@missionfigdeluxe glad to hear. I'm not alone. Thank you.
It’s certainly a double standard.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@DukeOfEarle It is, I feel everyone should stop using it.
SW-User
Well honestly I feel like it's just a word.... well the er one I wouldn't ever say but "nigga" doesn't seem bad to me
If people felt uncomfortable then I wouldn't say it

people call us Beaners all the time and people think that's ok
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User What does Beaner mean?
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User I feel since people feel offended by it, the word should not be used. I know many Mexicans that don't like being referred to by that term.
I agree with you.
kydflash · 31-35, M

@wildbill83 Well he is not lying, these individuals make all of us look bad. It has others thinking we're all the same and it's not true.

@whynottalk Personally I feel the word should not be used by anyone.

I have always thought that - because I think words and names are important. Language influences thinking as well as thinking influencing language.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@Mamapolo2016 Agreed, well said
@kydflash So..,there’s a couple of us. 😊
65Roses · 26-30, F
I don’t like it simply because of its history. But then again, as long as it’s not used as a racial slur against someone, it’s not my business to decide what comes out of people’s mouths.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@65Roses True, because of the history behind it. No matter how it's spelled or used. People will still find it offensive.
I always thought it was offensive but it seems like black people don't mind it they call each other that all the time
kydflash · 31-35, M
@ExperienceDLT True, but i feel if we get offended when other people use it as well. Then we should also stop using it. Because it shows we still find the word offensive.
I don't use it
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
I’ve always hated it. I don’t think people should use it as endearment or insult.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@kydflash Thanks. Although, I’m SO far away from the black community, so I’m not sure if my opinion matters.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@ShaythePanTransMan Your opinion matters a lot and greatly appreciate it. Good to get responses and thoughts from every community.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@kydflash Haha thank you. I’m in the school of thought that not everyone’s opinion matters though, only educated ones, and mine isn’t.
SW-User
I think you're absolutely right. I hate hearing anyone using it. It's origin is filled with hate and derision.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User Thank you, Thats the point I wanted make. We should just leave the word alone.
SW-User
I can't stand the word. It's totally heinous.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User So true, I wish people would just stop using it.
SW-User
@kydflash Some people have the audacity to use freedom of speech to justify using it.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User That's sad, the word has so much negativity surrounding it, that it should be put to rest.
Effloresce · 26-30, F
The hard R is a definite no, but I’m not much of a fan of the less abrasive word either
kydflash · 31-35, M
@Effloresce Same here, I feel it's bad either way.
SW-User
It’s degrading and I find it dumb that people still use it.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@SW-User Same here, Thank you.
Selah ·
You said yourself you dont understand why so mind your business.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@Selah Why should I mind my business? When someone does not understand something it's only right for them to ask questions

I don't like it. Too much negativity surrounding it. I don't use it.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@uncalled4 Same here
MethDozer · M
It's not much different than when friends and peers use the word asshole or motorcycle in reference to each other without actually meaning the negative connotation.
MethDozer · M
@kydflash Think about it.
kydflash · 31-35, M
@MethDozer Will think about it but doubt my opinion will change. Both words don't hold the same amount of weight and history.
MethDozer · M
@kydflash That doesn't mean anything about the phenomena and behavior itself.

@ExtremeNext Well, maybe to you is. The fact is that it is a very distasteful word, and using it on here will get you banned.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
@SW-User go and report me I hear you have a history of that anyway
SW-User
@ExtremeNext Okay sure, as if a person is notified of just who exactly reports them when they do something stupid on here 😆.
