I've always understood actions online to be used in asterisks. I think it's a thing from when I used to play older games and message boards where different symbols were used to identify what's going on.

I've even seen words that are being sung as being put inside ~/o to show that the person is singing.

It stems from the action command in the early real time chat programs the later ones used other commands such as /me
