Something that just popped up in my head and I can't seem to get it out

How did the expression "there are many ways to skin a cat" come about? How many cats were harmed in the making of that expression??? 😣

idk if they were referring to domestic cats or large wildcats of the hills like mountain lions and tigers or whatever 😒
