Yes. My late wife and I were asked to be godparents of her sister's first child. As it turns out she had severe learning disabilities that have allowed her to be basically functional but unemployable, on disability, and not fully competent to take care of her financial matters. And both her parents died young, so our godparenting responsibilities extended decades longer than originally thought.
