Religion could be another obsession. Especially when it turns to fanaticism.
There's nothing selfish in becoming a martyr. Dead is dead.

No, not at all. To be obsessed with something is to have an interest in whatever it is that one is obsessed with to a degree that is above and beyond what society deems to be "normal", whereas selfishness is failing to take into consideration the needs or interests of others.
