The highlight of my day was being able to say hi to a girl.
But she's not just any girl, she's become an inspiration to me without even knowing. My friend told me about that 24 year old girl they had in the ICU who's been living with cystic fibrosis and been on and off the hospitals her whole life. In May things got very bad and she had to be in a box; things we take for granted like seeing the sky every day, she was months without. She is the longest surviving person on ECMO in my country- more than 100 days. Before that, she refused to have an unlived experience. Things that healthy people dream of doing, she didn't have enough time ahead of her so she had to make them happen. She was finally put on the list for lung transplantation which was done successfully last week. I'm talking about it all because she's made public speeches about her condition too and she's very active socially, she wants to raise awareness about it.
Today I got dressed in all the protective wear and peeked through the door of her room in the unit. I told her my friend is very happy about her and that she wishes she will go scuba diving soon. She doesn't have a voice because of her tracheostomy but she was full of life in that moment. Even her name means resurrection, I'm sure her new lungs will be used to the fullest. 🫁
