I think for extreme fears which are disabling, a comprehensive treatmemt regimen should be sought out. This would likely include visualization, exposure, and tools to help deal with the anxiety and the stress. I assume "exposure" would be carefully monitored and extended, in a manner similar to "allergy injections".
But why go through that for NON-disabling fears, unless this was to give yourself some success to deal with a disabling fear?

I had heard a woman who tried that that had a fear of flying, mid flight she freaked out and tried opening one of the doors and had to be subdued, apparently it was back in the 80's.
