What do you think about the Novak Djokavic situation in Australia?

He's being deported after eleven days in country.
I think he had plenty of time to get ready and he chose not to.

He was more than willing to risk others to get what he wanted, and lie about it into the bargain.

Stupid idiot! Just because you're a celeb doesn't mean that you can expect privileges....and, following it through the courts like he has, shows me that he has no humility.

You've done wrong, lad. You apologised...fine...but then it's down to the other side to make their decision! And that should be it...

You don't poke someone in the eye....say sorry...and expect to get a hug from them!

Grow up. Learn. Be humble.

The lesson I take is this: if you plan to beg a nation for a special favor - such as exemption from the nation's vaccination requirement - you shouldn't begin the process by lying on your official paperwork.

Lying at the outset really gets you off on the wrong foot. Try truthfulness next time. At least you'll have the moral high ground.

Novax shouldn't have lied on his immigration papers. He's a celebrity so people act he's like god. Any ordinary foreign citizen would have been blacklisted for life for doing same.

Got what he deserved

Tennis Australia gave him an exemption to play but not an exemption to enter the country, that was up to Immigration and they weren't about to give him an exemption when they had previously disallowed thousands of Australians stuck overseas the ability to return home unless they were vaccinated. I think he got bad advice from his legal team prior to coming here, but it also seems like Tennis Australia and the Federal Government could have done more much earlier to prevent this all unfolding.

He adored himself too much.
Time to come back down on Earth.

I'll give you the exact story:
1. He did everything asked of him by Tennis Australia, the Victorian state government and was granted a visa by the federal government. He had approval by two medical panels and was therefore liable to enter.
2. He tweeted that he was coming and the media picked it up and created a ruckus about one rule for privileged people and another for the rest of us. Outrage sells.
3. The national government who are currently being criticised for mismanaging a number of things saw an opportunity to grab some headlines as a distraction, and when Djokavic was en route they overnight changed policy, made statements in the media. For two years the exception had been allowed, overnight it was gone.
4. The courts overturned the government decision.
5. Djokovic was shown up to be dishonest in two areas of his application and so this really settled his fate.
6. The relevant minister delayed the ministerial decision to time it with the news cycle and hope they didn't have time to launch an appeal. The appeal happened but failed.
I think a) He probably would have been ok if he didn't lie on his application and tweet that he was coming. b) The government needed media distraction because they've stuffed up COVID management.

He did somewhat of a service by highlighting the arbitrariness of our decision system and the plight of poor folk who live in those crappy detention hotels for years.

He should never have been allowed to land in the first place. But someone decided to play fast ans loose with the rules and allow three players in unvaxxed and it wasnt caught immediately. Two were shipped out quickly and Djokovic threw a tantrum that cost him money in legal fees and a three year ban that will prevent him returning unless vaccinated.😂
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Even if he is vaccinated, being legally deported automatically means you are banned for 3 years
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@nedkelly True. But he can apply to have that waved if he wanted to return.. However, he now has to PROVE he qualifies to enter.😷
Ceinwyn · 26-30, F
Another celeb who thinks they magically don’t have to comply to the rules the rest of us must live by.
NoSugar · 22-25, F
there is this thing called rules consequences... most people learn that as kids

Had he been humble and simply admitted that his agent made a mistake, said sorry, perhaps things would have turned out differently for him but no, instead he chose to defy the Australian Government and now this filthy rich (($220M net worth) privileged athlete gets deported and will have to pay the $500k legal fees incurred. Can't feel sorry for him, go home, get the shots and begin rebuilding your damaged reputation. How can a guy who travels internationally willingly defy the vax order of most Nations to protect the health and wellbeing of their citizens???
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@spjennifer Post-post script.. The French government have bought in a stronger law preventing foreigners from entering France unless vaccinated in the wake of the Australian Debacle. The Spanish are also looking into inconsistencies regarding statements Djokovic made regarding his Spanish stay before flying to OZ. and in late news Djocovics biggest sponsor LaCoste, is seeking urgent discussions with Djokovic regarding their arrangements with him.
Now I have no doubt that in the past People in authority in govt were prepared to turn a blind eye and make allowances for Djokovic to step quietly over the line for the sake of having the World Number one grace them with his presence. But it seems the tide may be turning... ABOUT PH*CKING TIME!!!😷

I’m sure there is a minor indoor tournament somewhere in Europe that would be happy to see him

It's taken up too much news time
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Novak Djokovic thinks he is GOD, GOD does not play tennis
meggie · F
If he doesn't get vaccinated then it's highly likely he won't be able to compete in some of the other tournaments this year.
