However it can be very difficult to keep a conversation going on here, what with real life and time zones etc

as near as I can tell, following someone here normally means you're not going to interact with them. I dunno why it works that way, just that that's how it seems to go.

If you want to get to know a follower, follow them back and interact on their posts, replies and comments. You have to take the initiative.

It's also hard to strike up a conversation if your followers live in different time zones.
