What do you do when you have horrible tooth pain and need a root canal right away and a crown, but cannot afford it?

I am so upset. This is the position I am in right now and a much needed root canal and crown done right away, but I really cannot afford it. What do they expect people to do? I was charged $101 yesterday, just to have one tooth x-rayed, no work done. That is so outrageous. I have no dental insurance. The total amount to fix the tooth comes to $1,518. What can I do? I am just at a loss. Even eating or drinking regular room temperature water, hurts like crazy..

I'm sorry to hear, medical care is expensive. My friend couldn't afford the root canal and crown and had to have the tooth extracted. The dentist said if it was left to long, it would cause an infection - abscess. I hope you manage to find some relief while you come up with a solution.

I really wish there was something practical I could do to help- I really do. But I am not in the best position myself and burrowed in credit card debt.

Go to a hospital that have dentists doing their residency , they’ll charge you a lot less than established providers and usually do a great job cause they need a good grade to pass their classes.

@deadteddy You mean a dental clinic where they're training people right? I don't have any near me, but yes, I thought about checking into that.

Dental pain is the worst. Priced are extortionate. I don't know what to suggest my friend.....but i hope the pain sunsides soon. X

Go to a hospital and they will at least prescribe some antibiotics and pain relief.

@icedsky I have an antibiotic I'm taking right now but it only lasts for 7 days so I might have to do that.

@LadyGrace If you got pain medicine at an ER..it could give you a few days, to see if a church nearby could aid. It only took a few days in which they helped My sister

@Coralmist You know, when I had car trouble one time, and couldn't afford the repairs, I called all the churches in the area and not one would help. Can you believe it? Unbelievable what this world has come to.

Tooth pain is something I can never stand. ☹

I know dental procedures are way too expensive but you have to get it done ASAP. Otherwise infection will lead to tooth extraction.

Are there no Govt hopitals in your country??
