Maybe I'm a little soft for this....

I was a substitute teacher, but I quit, and it wasn't because kids were being loud and obnoxious. I can handle that, but it was because I was getting bullied by the students. Many of them laughed at my physical appearance...I couldn't take it. It brought back memories of when I was in high school and it happened to me daily. I don't want to go through that again, and frankly the shitty pay isn't worth it.

Gosh I wouldn’t even consider being a teacher or substitute teacher with the way things are now, I say you’re smart to stay away from public schools.

@BackyardShaman it’s all schools sadly. I know from experience that even at a single sex college prep students were awful especially to new teachers.

Even here in New Zealand, where we like to kid ourselves that we are "nice", teachers are bullied every day. It's been worse since Covid lockdowns. In addition, barely over 50% of children are at school full time (full time being 90% attendance).

Kids are brutal. When I was in high school, these rowdy punk boys were making such mean comments about our substitute teacher's appearance that she ran from the classroom crying, and came back escorted by the principal, who gave those boys a harsh speech and a day in ISS (In-School Suspension).
Give them extra home work to do every time they act up.

So sorry that happened to you , I blame parents who havnt raised their kids to respect their elders . My kids wouldnt dare have treated a teacher like that because they knew dad would warm their backside if he found out .

sorry about that

I don't think you're too soft.
Kids are cruel and I can see how it would take you right back to when you were a student.
It's not worth dealing with, again.

Teenagers are awful, and while I consider myself to have a tough skin, I wouldn't work with them either. Why don't you try being a substitute for the toddlers or up to second graders.
