You are so right regarding narcissists.
Criticism, if constructive, should point the way towards our growth. It can be a positive.
It can also be used as a weapon to inflict hurt.
Like many, I have experienced both kinds of criticism. I have also learned and grown from both. I have become a better person from the former and a stronger one from the latter.

First I consider the source, if I don't know them, I brush it off, because they don't know me. If I know them, and respect their opinion, I will either ask them what I could do differently, or agree with them and try to change what ever I'm doing to get criticized.

If it's friendly advice and makes sense, I'll apply it to my life, if possible. Otherwise, I tend to forget about it.

If it's from someone I respect, I appreciate the advice.
