How can I convince my mom to let me talk to my doctor about birth control?

The cramps I get are awful and prevent me from doing easy things, like unloading the dishwasher but she won't agree with me on it.

Talk to her. Sit down, come armed with some really good information, and remind her that this isn't about sex, but even still you're old enough to be careful.

Birth control has its benefits and its side effects, so it's a medical discussion you need to have with your doctor, but remind your mom that birth control also prevents STD's and pregnancy (never 100%). Sure, neither one of you wants to discuss sex and it's excruciatingly uncomfortable for some, but you need to impress upon her the fact that it's better to have birth control than it is to have a lifelong commitment in a child or a deadly disease.

Read up, get the info, talk to your mom like the adult you want to be recognized for and good luck.

I guess the reason she doesn't want you to is because birth control pills are packed with hormones and can stop you from producing your own, making you dependent on them.

It's your choice after all, but I also recommend ibuprofen, it had helped me with very bad stomach cramps before.

I have tried it before and it made no difference. Pain medicine doesn't help me.

Rather than specifically asking for birth control, you can say "Can I get an appointment about the cramps at all?". If they're that debilitating they should be treated in some way.

She doesn't want me to make an appointment at all and I can't really do it behind her back.

You'd have to dodge her on this but you could for example go to a Planned Parenthood clinic for some advice and help in dealing with the cramps. If it's really not an option, your best bet is to ride this period out and try again.

There's a lot of home remedies you can use to help reduce the severity of the cramps you can google, but I'm sure you've done that.

@TyphoidJerry: To the last part, I have. To the first part, I would need someone to give me a ride though.

There are better ways to manage cramping. And your mother probably doesn't want to encourage you to have sex by giving you birth control. Look at it this way; you are only a year or so away from being able to get to a doctor on your own.
fluteacorn · 22-25, F
@greenmountaingal: But I also know that it doesn't work for that 100% of the time and I never want kids, so I'm going to die a virgin.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Rene1027: Your mother knows that is unlikely. Guys happen. Ask her to see a doctor about your cramps and tell her you will ask the doctor to write a prescription that will not be a contraceptive.
fluteacorn · 22-25, F
@greenmountaingal: I still am not having sex for a long time though, so I don't know what she would be worried about.

No more Mommy in the Room with you!

Insist!

Privacy! Insist! She can just sit in the damned waiting room!
Ask if you can be in the room during her next ob/gyn appt.
fluteacorn · 22-25, F
@Th1nkF1rst: I can't even make an appointment though, since she would find out about it.

Try magnesium supplements. They help my sister with her cramps

I think it helps balance hormones or something. Here's something to look at:

@Rene1027:

@Rene1027: calcium and magnesium tablets along with some yogurt or milk (not fat free). This can really help.

Hold on, I just asked my sister about it and the thing that helps her with her cramps isn't the magnesium, after all. It's this product, called "Cramp Bark": http://www.iherb.com/pr/Eclectic-Institute-Cramp-Bark-2-fl-oz-60-ml/2815
She says it helps the cramps go away about 90%-95%.

The following is what my sister wrote for you:
"So I don’t know if this will work for everyone, but here’s what’s helped alleviate my cramps.

About a week before they usually start I drink tea that contains Yarrow Root throughout the day. I drink the Gypsy Cold Care herbal supplement, if you want you can get it on iHerb for $5.

Then, 3 days before the cramps start, I mix 15 drops of Cramp Bark into a glass of water. I do this for the 3 days before and on the day of. Personally, I’ve noticed the biggest difference from this supplement compared to everything else I’ve tried. I could actually walk and not be in constant agony! Haha.

Warm epsom salt baths will replenish the magnesium in your system. It is cheap and worth trying. Your Mom might have some already.
curiosi · 61-69, F
Consider the possibility that your mom knows better then you do. Tough I know but..........
fluteacorn · 22-25, F
How would she know better? She said it wouldn't help at all.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
It's YOUR enzymes... not hers.

If she loves you, ya know?
