Why does it seem like so many young people think that they shouldn't have kids?

I can't wrap my head around it. They think that it would make the world more sustainable, reduce some imaginary carbon footprint, make them wealthier than their peers, etc. I don't buy any of that crap. Has no one told them that this fantastic* future means nothing if the people who populate it don't share their genes and their values?

What do you all think on the subject?
So you're a eugenicist then?
馃ぃ Yeah, the guy who thinks people should have kids is a eugenicist. That's the most ridiculous response I could have hoped to elicit from this post.

The place is a fucked up mess. I'm not having kids.
Invisible26-30, M
Now that's a valid reason!
What are you on about?
CaptainCanadia41-45, M
All of those are just justifications. The truth is it doesn't make sense to have kids.

Our society punishes people for having kids. The economy is set up now so that both parents have to work in most middle-class jobs, daycare is hideously expensive, and there's very little relief if you don't have a supportive immediate family.

Although I think the overpopulation issue is overstated, it's not exactly harmful to not have kids. Canada doesn't have a super high birth rate, so we just compensate with immigration.

Yup -- that's me!

Kids are very expensive unless you have the luxury of not giving a shit.

It varies between person, some are more inclined to be single minded while others are more dependent of others in their lives, there's a lot to take into account like the upbringing of an individual, it can drastically change how he views the world, the atmosphere where he developed in.

1. Quite a few young people I know would want kids when they're older
2. Imaginary carbon footprint? Very confused by that
3. Why is that a fantasy?
Javik0526-30, M
1. Agree with you there, fair point.
2. Let me guess, you think a hoax orchestrated by the Chinese.
3. I see where you're coming from, but that's a matter of personal opinion.
Invisible26-30, M
1. Let me guess, you read a lot of listicles?
2. Let me guess, you religiously follow leftist doctrine?
3. Let me guess, you haven't actually looked much into climate science research?
4. Let me guess, you rely on "consensus" and journalists for your climate beliefs?
5. Let me guess, no one ever told you the difference between climate and weather?
6. Let me guess, no one ever told you about the "global cooling" crap from the 70s and prior?
7. Let me guess, you don't think that the Earth's natural systems are mean reverting, even though they've persisted for more time than humans can fathom?
8. Let me guess, you believe in hockey stick graphs from a decade or two ago that never came to fruition?
9. Let me guess, it never crossed your mind that in a few generations we might not be using fossil fuels, so that argument falls apart?

No, I don't think global warming was invented by the Chinese, I think it was made in the west for green businesses to get loads of money from the government and pay very little in taxes. It's doing nothing but hurt us in terms of macroeconomics.

It's not a matter of personal opinion that you'll never get rich on a median household income of $50K!
Javik0526-30, M
1. No, but I find it easier to organise points that way.
2. I don't happen to religiously follow the left, both sides are fairly shite.
3. Seems like I should be asking you that question.
4. Nope, hard data.
5. The two are linked, but not the same. This proves nothing.
6. No, but after a little reading, it seems like we should conquer problems we know now, rather than waiting to see if things level out.
7. Bring me some evidence that doesn't suggest correlation to the masses of greenhouse gasses we're pumping into the atmosphere, I'll see how my opinion develops.
8. Nope, I prefer recent data that comes from multiple reliable sources.
9. If no one invests in green energy because they think it's bs, that won't happen.

Kids are fucking expensive mate, retaining the wealth people have would definitely make them richer than if they had a child. Not all countries have child benefit, mind.
HaHLoBravado36-40, M
Don't worry, most of them will be accidentally making them anyway.
Invisible26-30, M
And getting abortions...
HaHLoBravado36-40, M
Majority won't, it's expensive.. ur not the first generation to feel this way but here u are.

I have 5 and want more. having kids is also an amazing part of life not to miss out on
uncalled456-60, M
Good. Morons should not be encouraged to reproduce. Furthermore, if they all want to reduce the carbon footprint, we have several bridges they can jump off. Cheers!
