Why does it seem like so many young people think that they shouldn't have kids?

I can't wrap my head around it. They think that it would make the world more sustainable, reduce some imaginary carbon footprint, make them wealthier than their peers, etc. I don't buy any of that crap. Has no one told them that this fantastic* future means nothing if the people who populate it don't share their genes and their values?

What do you all think on the subject?

All of those are just justifications. The truth is it doesn't make sense to have kids.

Our society punishes people for having kids. The economy is set up now so that both parents have to work in most middle-class jobs, daycare is hideously expensive, and there's very little relief if you don't have a supportive immediate family.

Although I think the overpopulation issue is overstated, it's not exactly harmful to not have kids. Canada doesn't have a super high birth rate, so we just compensate with immigration.
