So, my girlfriend of fifteen years

Is gone. Moved out and taking her cat with her. My cat is hopelessly attached to her little mate and I'm worried that she will fret for her. My question is should I provide another cat for her to play with?

I'm guessing you're glad to see the gf gone lol..as you only seem worried about the cat

I'm gutted that she's gone. I'm just trying to keep my mind from chasing itself into madness.

@Cavedweller: the cat will be fine, get a new hobby instead.

my kitty mourned the loss of her friend for weeks..
I waited almost a year before I adopted a new kitten to be her companion..
it was a huge mistake, they never got along with each other and she was much less affectionate for months after the new kitty came in...
it may not be a good idea...

Really? How old was the kitten? I got a 10 week old kitten for my three year old female and she adopted him, instantly. I've never, in 72 years, known an adult female to reject a kitten.

he was six weeks and she hissed at him..
he grew to twenty pounds his first year to her 7.5 pounds.
maybe it was his size..
after a long while they would sleep on the couch together at opposite ends!
but they were never friends.

@onestarrynight: that's sad. My little guy grew huge too. And my girl is less than ten pounds. When he was a kitten, he had a game he liked playing. He'd get up on a table or chair and when she walked past, he'd pounce on her from above. Such fun. Until he got to weigh more than twice what she does. He'd flatten her. One day she had enough. She flipped him over and grabbed him by the throats and growled. He's never done it again, but he still gets above her and jumps down, only now he jumps behind her and bites her tail and runs away. And there's a merry chance on for a few minutes.

Yes. Poor kitty. 馃槹馃惐馃悎

She needs a rough and tumble buddy. But I reckon I'll wait a bit. Strengthen our bond.

I have found that female cats will very easily accept a kitten, but not so easily another adult cat. Even a spayed cat gets maternal when there's a kitten in the house. The younger, the better

No. I wouldn't make a knee jerk reaction like that
Cavedweller46-50, F
She may well thrive on being on her own. How long do you think I should wait?
BeardedDoc31-35, M
I personally would wait a few months before you decide if you still want to get another cat. Introducing new cats into a household can be very difficult, and you might find yourself regretting it.

@MrRandomguy10: I'm thinking that if a new addition is made it'll be after the holiday season. There will be plenty of Christmas throw away kittens. And I want to bond with my cat more, make her feel secure.
MorbidCynicF
Be careful, your cat may be territorial at first. Make sure you properly introduce them.
Cavedweller46-50, F
Of course. I need to make sure she feels loved and also secure in her place in the pack. (The family that is me and her)
SW-User
oh yes.. you'd love that and so would the cat..it's a new start.. what could possibly go wrong..
Cavedweller46-50, F
She could have a reaction to said kitten that I haven't planned on. She could be nasty..
SW-User
If you feel you are up for another cat I say go for it. 馃惐
