So, my girlfriend of fifteen years

Is gone. Moved out and taking her cat with her. My cat is hopelessly attached to her little mate and I'm worried that she will fret for her. My question is should I provide another cat for her to play with?

my kitty mourned the loss of her friend for weeks..
I waited almost a year before I adopted a new kitten to be her companion..
it was a huge mistake, they never got along with each other and she was much less affectionate for months after the new kitty came in...
it may not be a good idea...

Really? How old was the kitten? I got a 10 week old kitten for my three year old female and she adopted him, instantly. I've never, in 72 years, known an adult female to reject a kitten.

he was six weeks and she hissed at him..
he grew to twenty pounds his first year to her 7.5 pounds.
maybe it was his size..
after a long while they would sleep on the couch together at opposite ends!
but they were never friends.

@onestarrynight: that's sad. My little guy grew huge too. And my girl is less than ten pounds. When he was a kitten, he had a game he liked playing. He'd get up on a table or chair and when she walked past, he'd pounce on her from above. Such fun. Until he got to weigh more than twice what she does. He'd flatten her. One day she had enough. She flipped him over and grabbed him by the throats and growled. He's never done it again, but he still gets above her and jumps down, only now he jumps behind her and bites her tail and runs away. And there's a merry chance on for a few minutes.
