I think feeding the hungry is the right and the Christian thing to do, I think there are limits though. There are those that are content to live off of charity without trying to make way for themselves. There was a man recently who had several families in addition to a family with his wife, he was wealthy, owning his own business, paying no child support and his side families had collected over a million dollars worth of benefits while he paid nothing. I try to help people that want to work. I drive for work, a lady was asking for help for food, I gave her enough to go into the rest stop and purchase food, as I left the travel stop, she stopped me again but now the story was her car was broken and she needed money for a tow truck. It can be difficult to know who really needs help and who is just taking advantage of other people's good will. My wife and I hired a coworker's daughter to babysit for us, I came home from work, she mentioned quitting school, she was just a few months away from her 16th birthday, I asked about graduation, maybe college, nope, she said "I am going to have a baby." She didn't have a boyfriend, obviously wasn't pregnant, not planning on getting married, she said, "I will be 16, get pregnant, have a baby, get housing, a medical card, food stamps, I will have my own place and my own life." I don't think that is the reason for or the purpose of public assistance but for some, it is reality. I try to donate charitably to organizations that help those trying to help themself. As a Christian, I believe God helps those "in need", not those "in want".

The purpose of the catchphrase is to encourage everyone to do their duty and their part of action. While in reality everything is not in your hands and many things may depend on other factors not in your hand which are not letting you succeed inspite of all your efforts. The purpose is you must always give all your efforts, whether or not you succeeds.
That is where in every religion, helping others in the need is considered as good deed. The purpose is to maintain humanity in society, where someone should not live in inhuman circumstances.
First one defines the vision for the person in difficult circumstances, while the other is about others'(society') moral duty towards that person.

@ABCDEF7 you obviously don't know many religions. In some religions it is against the religion to help the poor. The religion says that you are one fire circumstance because of you past lives and going through this hardship will help you in your future lives.

I think the phrase god helps those who helps themselves is actually more usefully understood as being the same in intention as when Jesus says “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” because when Jesus says this it comes with the caveat that what you ask for must be good in gods estimation.
So if you help yourself become closer to god then you will ask for the right things and then you’ll find you receive them because god is generous with his children.
There’s a useful Chinese story that is a good response to people who ask “but why have all these awful things happened to me? Why did god allow that?”
It’s called “we will see”.

The phrase "God helps those who help themselves" implies that everyone will, equally, wish to TRY to help themselves. Such is not the case. Some people just roll over and wallow in their lack of almost everything...including ambition, (losers and users). Some people create their own disabilities...(drug addicts and alcoholics).
So...does God abandon the feckless and irresponsible? NO! God created bleeding heart liberals to enable all of the welfare users, who have one baby after another, every year, deliberately to keep their benefits coming, most often out of wedlock .
They enable the drug addicts by making drugs legal and by providing the addicts with syringes and crack pipes at no cost to themselves.
They pity the alcoholic bum sleeping on the streets and try to create shelters and programs to help him. (None of which he will employ, or even want).
God, in His wisdom, created a world in which the feckless and irresponsible do not survive. Bleeding heart liberals, [i]without[/i] wisdom, wish to make it possible for these people to survive indefinitely, with programs paid for by ALL taxpayers.
And I do NOT include those who are genuinely physically disabled, or the frail and elderly who can no longer work, in my condemnation.

Usually those who helped themselves thinking they were helping God along such as Abraham and Sarah having a baby with Sarah's handmaid Haggar and having Ishmeal yeah, that didn't work out too well! But as the saying goes God helps those who help themselves this is the aftermath of that theory! It's not biblical! Those who are obedient and let the Holy Spirit guide and manufest Himself are the ones who are truly blessed and are a blessing!

In the end i believe the only thing that is universal is suffering. Dress it up but its only pain that unites people to a cause. The in our day thing is religion helps the community survive. Nowadays. lol. religion is often community for an aging population and or a refuge from suffering. But outdated less and less helpful and unproductive. Old perspective in a chanhing new workd.
