Did you choose to be an atheist? Can one choose to be an atheist? [Spirituality & Religion]

Today im a fucking helicopter. Whoosh
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Gangstress 🚁 I love the fapping sound of a helicopter. 😅
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@Degbeme 😂😂😱

I don't think it was a matter of choice. You can't force yourself to believe in something when it seems so evidently untrue. To me, at least. I respect other people's right to see things differently.
@GlassDog

That's my feeling as well.

I think that’s an odd way to phrase it; that being an atheist is a choice. We don’t choose for there to be no evidence of God/s, there just isn’t any and so we reject the claim. That’s not so much a choice rather than the application of basic logic and reason.

It’s not like you choose whether or not to believe in vampires or leperachauns; there isn’t an alternate choice to “no, there’s clearly no evidence that those things exist”.

By saying it’s a choice you're saying that both options are valid, atheism and theism. But theists haven’t met their burden of proof, and so really it isn’t a choice. Otherwise every non-belief is a choice, which seems silly.
@SW-User

Well exactly. I don't know how one can choose what to believe. In my experience belief is a reaction to evidence. You can't choose to believe that which you do not believe.

I'm more agnostic than atheist, and it wasn't so much a choice as it was the conclusion of analysis of religious doctrine and the people claiming to be followers.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Zaphod42 Psssst the church isn't a retirement home for saints. Its a hospital for sinners.
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
@hippyjoe1955 love your response Joe!
@Zaphod42

I'd say that an agnostic atheist is the only kind of atheist a rational person can be lol.
But i agree that it doesn't seem to be a choice, really.
Yes, I'm leaning towards Agnostics though. But yea it's my choice.
@SW-User

I think the only kind of atheist a thinking person can be is agnostic.
SW-User
@Pikachu I’d agree. I think that the term “atheist” is misunderstood by a lot of people, and that many of those who idenfty as agnostic would also be atheist.

It’s not like atheists pretend to know what is true; in fact, quite the opposite.
@SW-User I just look at it as labels and even in Atheism some do label it. I just don't like the idea of labels as much as I don't like the idea of religion. All labels are stupid because they can be used to cause more harm than good.

I thought they were born that way. 😂
@gregloa

I know the story, sure. But i also know the story of how peter parker became spider-man 😁
gregloa · 61-69, M
@Pikachu funny which one you believe 😂
@gregloa

lol aww buddy...
SW-User
Yes. I chose to be an atheist
@SW-User

How did you choose?
SW-User
@Pikachu I just figured that religions were not a thing for me, so I decided to be an atheist
Everything is a choice. I was born inti a religious family but it was never for me. Ive always been this way it seems though
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Yes after reviewing all the religions it is the best choice.
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
We are chosen to spread God's word.
@Carla1951

Maybe. Maybe not.
Do you have an answer to the question though?
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Religion taught me to be an a atheist.
nowic2 · 61-69, M
Yes, I believe it is about what we choose to believe or disbelieve. Two people looking at the same thing can come up with different answers. Regardless, for me it's a case of live & let live, respectfully.
@nowic2

I find that i cannot choose what i believe. I either believe it or i don't.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
The average atheist isn't smart enough to make the choice.
@hippyjoe1955

*sigh*

so much hate.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Pikachu Thanks for proving my point.
@hippyjoe1955

lol you got it buddy😉👍
NeloAngelo · 26-30, M

DDonde · 31-35, M
Yes and yes
