Did you choose to be an atheist? CAN one choose to be an atheist? [Spirituality & Religion]

For me, not believing in a god is not a choice any more than not believing in santa claus is a choice.
I simply don't believe the story. The tales are improbable, the evidence unconvincing.
I can't decide that i believe that which i do not believe.

I think you choose to believe or not. I also believe we should ponder these questions with a humble heart.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Pikachu But my mission is complete now that you believe that I believe that Santa is in fact real even if I have unequivocally stated that he is not real.
😝
@SimplyTracie

lol i think you'll find i was pretty explicit in the fact that i did NOT believe you😉

@seeandhear

I think the need to explain that which we cannot explain and the feeling of aw at the power and scale of nature go a long way to accounting for the reason people believe in gods

I never chose.. although i wouldn't consider myself an atheist, i just spent my whole childhood at a catholic boarding school being taught about christianity.. well often having it beat into me because i asked too many questions... just trying to understand and get it to make sense... and day and night and everyone else seemed to get right into it, but it just didn't work for me. I never rejected it. I actually really wanted to become a christian so i could feel normal like everyone else around me. But it all felt like people talking about a vacation they'd experienced together that i hadn't been on. I could listen and think wow, that seems amazing. But i could neither believe or disbelieve it because i wasn't part of their experience and never had my own.

@Pikachu It really was. I feel i should have been just trying to be a child and do children things and learn to understand myself, but i was forced to continually struggle with the concept of religion while being made to feel bad that i wasn't understanding.

Sucks to be an outsider

@Pikachu It does!
I know I didn't choose to be. You have to be convinced of something to beleive it. I find it ironic that people with religious beliefs do not actually know how belief works. I mean if someone could prove to me something exists that would be awesome. The scientists in me would love to have a whole new reality to explore and be comforted that something cares about us. But no one has been able to convince me so I can't believe anything.

I mean that i can't choose to believe something in which i do not believe.
You follow?
@Pikachu It stands to reason - I guess - never heard it put that way before , but OK
@MarmeeMarch

There you are then😉

If one does not believe in an omnipotent God then by default one is an Atheist. No need to decide.

Some people need the “comfort” of religion. I have no problem with it, as long as they don’t try to impose it, or their moral codes, on others.

The parting of the sea may be real. At the time, the water was pretty shallow. If you build a model, to simulate what happens if the wind was blowing, for a few days, like it does in certain conditions, it can create a semi-tunnel through the shallow water. That would be science
Violentxdelights · 22-25, F
depends, some choose to be an atheist because they were taught religion & simply didn’t want to follow it later in life. Some never had religion in their life to begin with so they didn’t really have to choose to be an atheist
@Violentxdelights

I'm not sure that, that is accurate. Can you decide that you don't believe in god? If you are brought up in a religion and decide you don't want to follow it that is one thing. But can you decide that you don't believe it or is disbelief an uncontrollable response to an uncompelling story?
You can and I did.
@Pikachu I was dragged off to Catholic Church and threatened with all sorts if I didn't believe.I decided I didn't and no harm came to me.Pass on the other one but we do have free will
@TheSirfurryanimalWales

How did you decide not to believe or did you come to the realization that you didn't believe?
I came to realization that if God existed there was no need to threaten folk into believing.No one can prove God exists or doesn't exist.I just can't believe the Universe was created by some supreme being.No one really knows how it all started.Its up to folk to come to their own conclusions.
