Destiny of Humanity

Modern industrial civilization has developed within a certain system of convenient myths. The driving force of modern industrial civilization has been individual material gain, which is accepted as legitimate, even praiseworthy, on the grounds that private vices yield public benefits in the classic formulation.

Now, it's long been understood very well that a society that is based on this principle will destroy itself in time. It can only persist with whatever suffering and injustice it entails as long as it's possible to pretend that the destructive forces that humans create are limited: that the world is an infinite resource, and that the world is an infinite garbage-can. At this stage of history, either one of two things is possible: either the general population will take control of its own destiny and will concern itself with community-interests, guided by values of solidarity and sympathy and concern for others; or, alternatively, there will be no destiny for anyone to control.

As long as some specialized class is in a position of authority, it is going to set policy in the special interests that it serves. But the conditions of survival, let alone justice, require rational social planning in the interests of the community as a whole and, by now, that means the global community. The question is whether privileged elites should dominate mass-communication, and should use this power as they tell us they must, namely, to impose necessary illusions, manipulate and deceive the stupid majority, and remove them from the public arena. The question, in brief, is whether democracy and freedom are values to be preserved or threats to be avoided. In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than values to be treasured, they may well be essential to survival.

Owing to modern industrial civilization, most of us in the west are, in real terms, far wealthier than Louie XIV ever was. For all of his wealth he couldn’t buy a single dose of penicillin, go from Paris to London in two hours, make any kind of phone call, hold a computer in his hand or safely have his appendix removed.

Your life would have been much shorter, more nasty and brutish without the work of others building this civilization.
@redredred we do.
And quality of life is relative.

There are many in the world today , that despite ALL our advances in modern industrial civilisation and medicine, STILL cant buy penicillin or even buy a car. Let alone go to paris or london - Ever.

I think this is the point of the post. Its not about us, in first world countries having more - its about using what we have to make EVERY life on Earth have more of the basic quality of life we take for granted .

Smoothing out the curve, spreading quality of life to everyone.
Bringing every soul into the quality of life that the 21st century can deliver.

@OogieBoogie Tell me how you “smooth out the curve” without taking (by force of law) from some and giving it to others. Do you count yourself generous and caring because you’re willing to spend other people’s money?

The mechanism that made a good bit of the worlds population reasonably well off can still work for the rest. It does not include confiscation and distribution to others.
@redredred we are talking moral values here.
About if the world was a kinder place instead of a greedy one .

And wealth is already been confiscated for years by the 2 and perhaps 10%ers.

Do you really expect one person to be able to fit it?

The first three words are distracting , but your post is nice .
I wish to understand the gist of the post , but there are several things which are not portrayed nice .

One thing you said is good that there will be no destiny for anyone to control.
Because the world is held by elites , to counteract whom , the democracy is needed , but the chosen government ultimately becomes friend of the elites , and not of the beggar who voted for him .

The first option. Collective community taking control

“ Now, it's long been understood very well that a society that is based on this principle will destroy itself in time.”

Totally unproven and false allegation. Sparta, as just one example, outlawed the possession of private wealth. Been there recently?
Oh well, dying younger doesn't enter the Murkan equation. They're not going to judge. Ever.
It’s goen to sheet!

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout how'd u reverse the sheet?
Wow. What idiot had the sheer gall to give that a downvote?
