TRANS is gender essentialism...

You can be anything you want to be! Boys can do anything they want. Girls can do anything they want for jobs, career, fashion, marriage.

"I always knew I was a girl because I liked pink since I was a kid"
"I knew I was a boy cos I liked toy cars"

The biggest Gender essentialists are TRANS.

You can be a feminine boy or a masculine girl, that doesn’t mean your gender has to change!
BlueVeins · 26-30
Trans advocates don't believe that boys can't like pink or girls can't like blue. The trans perspective on gender is that gender is this loosely-defined cloud of traits that typically pool in one of two categories that most people slot themselves into. You certainly can have mostly feminine traits as a guy, but there's no reason why people shouldn't be socially allowed to identify as whatever gender they feel fits them better.

@LibertarianEmily @BlueVeins You two make me want a time machine.

@LibertarianEmily There's nothing wrong with being a masculine man or a feminine woman. Toxic masculinity isn't just when a man is masculine; the term refers specifically to aspects of masculinity which are socially harmful. Bimbo doesn't mean a woman being feminine; it refers to a hot woman with a room temperature IQ.

Frankly, embodying archetypes only makes you "in need of liberation" if those archetypes are meaningfully constraining you. This doesn't apply to a trans person (as much) because trans people very deliberately chose those archetypes, whereas cisgender people often just were born into them and un-introspectively acquiesced.

@emiliya This culture war will probably blow over within a couple decades. Similar thing happened with gay people in the 2000s and 2010s.

What is Trans?

It is technically true that transgender people as they identify today are gender essentialists. But that is because they are the result of a gender essentialist society. Gender is a social construct defining social roles and norms based on sex. When gender and sex mismatch, a person is transgender. That is the expected logical outcome in societies with strong gender definitions. Gender definitions have grown softer in the west in recent times, but there is still a lot of social pressure to be gender conforming.

Gender abolitionism is what it sounds like you are advocating for. If we as a society stopped defining everyday things as girl things and guy things then there would be less need for transgender identity because everyone else would not put them into buckets. There would still be a smaller group of people with physical body dysmorphia that would still feel that way though.

You can't call them the biggest ones though. Because the only reason it becomes a big deal is that everyone else makes it a big deal. Because people are worried about which bathrooms other people use or are worried their children might see a masculine looking person in a dress and ask questions.

That's not how it works. 😑

@LibertarianEmily But if it's a mental illness, then it is a medical condition.

But in your personal life, do you want to live the trad lifestyle?
LibertarianEmily · 26-30, F
@BohoBabe we let mental people have whatever they want?

Not exactly because I like femboys if you must know
BohoBabe · M
@LibertarianEmily No, but we give them the medical attention that best helps them. At least, we should. I believe in universal healthcare.

Everyone does. We're adorable.

The concept of gender is too weird for me. I prefer to think that there are two sexes plus typical and atypical behaviors possible of each.
LibertarianEmily · 26-30, F
@CleverGirl im a libertarian- if that’s their thing a go for it
BohoBabe · M
@LibertarianEmily Just because something is a social construct, doesn't mean you can't feel a deep sense of connection to said social construct. Remember, group identities are social tools, and humans are social creatures.

My German identity is important to me, but ethnicity is a social construct too. Pretty much everything you're say can also apply to ethnicity.
LibertarianEmily · 26-30, F
@BohoBabe yeah and the people who take it literally and overvalue it are ethnonationalists and whatever… you can wear lederhosen, but it you said: I know I was meant to be German cos I love lederhosen, would be a mental statement
You can be a giraffe for all I care.
Don’t expect me to play along is all .. 🤓

You can't really do anything you want unless you want to spend an Eternity in Hell hanging out with Richard Nixon, Billy Graham, and Trump.

(When I started to type "Billy" my tablet said "Bardy" and I almost left it like that.)
Munumbis · 46-50, M
No you can't. No one can.
Alyosha · 36-40, M
There's not a lot of reason in some of these activist spaces. A lot of sophistry, little reason.
