I'll try anything once. 🤷

@Nightwings It's a lot of things. Frankly the fact that animals can't advocate for themselves makes it basically inevitable that humans will abuse them if we insist on using them, regardless of the economic and political systems we live under. You can't really have a power imbalance where one party is completely at the other's mercy, without expecting it to become exploitative.

That said, the idea of cultivating animals to be killed is pretty ghoulish in itself, regardless of how the animals are treated in the meantime. No animal, if it could speak to us, would ever consent to an existence like that. If viewed from the animals' POV, the whole affair would make us humans look worse than the worst regimes ever to grace this Earth.
@BlueVeins @Nightwings I love the thoughtfulness of responses from you both.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@BlueVeins There's a lot of things that people don't know like I found out the other day that pigs don't really smell like that. What makes pig farms stink is that they unleash pheromones that if they are afraid, they stink like that.

And they have a keen sense of smell so they can smell their dead on the same farm.

It's really horrific if you look at it from the animals perspective. Even if they can't speak the same language they still have sensory experiences going on obviously.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
If it were wholly synthesised in a lab, it would not be "human" in any biological sense, so I cannot think of any substantial ethical objection. But I have been successfully deriving most of my nutrition from plant sources for over two decades. I can't imagine wanting to pay a lot more for complicated food that is probably less nutritious and less delicious.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
No.
I'm vegetarian anyway.
We are all animals and all related to a single tree of life. It's just a matter of where one divides and places certain values. I wouldn't be opposed to such a thing if it was treated in a certain manner. I mean I wouldn't be opposed to others if they did. I'm not so sure I would be able to bring myself to do that.

How about you?
Nightwings · F
@froggtongue I would if the setting was entirely appropriate. My reason is a blend of morbid curiosity and a childish pleasure that arrives from doing things which freaks out normal (boring) people. =b
@Nightwings I love that reason. 😊
I hope the ones that wanna try have heard of Prion diseases

@Magicianzini Veganism is about preventing the exploitation and abuse of animals. What animal is being exploited in this hypothetical?
@BlueVeins I would say "wow" .. but I already knew, hence my comment above.
hazegloom · M
just thinking about that makes me wanna puke tbh
Oh, Hellz no!

The NY Times did publish an article about cannabalism back in 2022. Insane 😜

Is it cheap, do I have to wash the dishes...high dollar stuff?

I'd pass out first
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
Well the trouble isn't the fact that it's meat, if grown in a lab not attached to any sentience I think that part is fine. The issue is that eating your own species creates prion diseases and if it's the same species, I dunno what the risk factors would be.

So likely not because kuru disease is pretty permanent.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
@SatanBurger Actually, apparently as long as you avoid eating human brain tissue, it’s fine as far as that goes. The cannibalistic tribes that only ate the muscle tissue didn’t have the same problems as those who as the brain as well.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Zaphod42 I asked ai and it said:

The “brain only” part is too simplistic: the highest prion risk is usually in brain and other nervous tissue, but prions can also be found in skeletal muscle, so muscle is not guaranteed safe

What is true:

Kuru in the Fore people was strongly linked to eating brain tissue, and women/children were affected more often largely because they ate the brain more often than men, who more often ate muscle .

That part supports the idea that brain tissue is the highest-risk tissue

What is misleading:

It is misleading to say tribes that ate only muscle “didn’t have the same problems” because muscle was harmless. The better explanation is that muscle likely carried a lower dose of infectious prions than brain tissue, not zero risk .

Modern prion research shows prions can accumulate in skeletal muscle in infected animals, which is why meat can still be a concern if the source is infected

For lab-grown human meat:

If the cells were truly free of prions and the process stayed sterile, the prion risk would be much lower in theory. But your concern is still reasonable: a product derived from human cells would need strong safeguards against any prion contamination, because prion diseases are unusually hard to detect and eliminate.

....

Since I don't trust big corporations to have safe guards I think I'll keep being vegan lol.
Munumbis · 46-50, M
No I'm not one of these commies you see on here.
@Munumbis It could be communistic if everybody got a fair share. It could be capitalistic if choice humans were higher prized. Say like Kobe Coby.

No fucking way
i might have already in a roundabout way...although not ethically but we did have a serial killer who would feed his victims to his pigs on his farm..."willie" pickton....look him up 😬
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@beermeplease I read a very detailed article and it said that nasty pig farm was actually hosting parties inviting CEO’s and other high-ups there and it was a blackmail operation. They would get them liquored up and then get them involved in things and take photos.

@Chris00987 I think one of the objections is when it's allowed that some might develop a strong desire for the taste. Keeping society safe is more important than someone getting to eat their preferred meat choice. We know that even with rules in place it sometimes even if rarely happens where a person will kill others to eat them. If cannibalism is allowed then how many more would go on killing sprees just for their love of the taste as opposed to doing so from just a basic survival point of view?
