We are on the way there; my country is becoming more multicultural all the time. :)

You've put your finger on what is fueling the political nastiness and culture wars in the US. Some are deeply disturbed by the demographic changes taking place and can't stand the idea of being in the minority and sharing power with people of a different background. They'll basically support ending democracy if that's what it takes to prevent this from happening.

I've heard others. I can't stop to learn them all. I've been learning french. I'll probably lean Spanish next but most Mexicans learn English. I don't know what is wrong with that. @Venturist

@ServantOfTheGoddess well i guess it would depend on the job but if communication is necessary how would you get anything done if you couldnt communicate effectively or be like friends.

@Penny If people speak a number of different languages they can also communicate effectively. Depending on context, those who know more than one of the languages involved can translate back and forth; people can also figure a lot out by gestures and empathy. I know at least one long-lasting couple who got together when neither knew the other's language (and that was before google translate and such!)
