NBC 'News' anchor Lester Holt says it is not always necessary to give 2 equal sides of a story, calls fairness ‘overrated’. [I Am For Unity, Equality and Peace]
"I think it’s become clear that fairness is overrated". "The idea that we should always give two sides equal weight and merit does not reflect the world we find ourselves in".
~ Lester Holt, NBC News April 1, 2021.

Well NBC has never worried about being fair

Admitting it in 2021 is about 50 years after most news organizations put it into practice.

in other words you are guilty because they say so?

Quite right too. Giving equal weight to the views of a murderer or a rapist about those subjects, or equal weight to someone who thinks the earth is flat is patently foolish.

@RogueLoner I am fascinated by the reasons people give for why they do awful things and very happy to listen to them. What I don't do is give 'equal weight' to all views when they come from places of ignorance or obvious self-interest. I think the news anchor was saying that not everything is binary and of equal value in understanding what is going on.

There are legitimate opinions on things which are based on facts and reason and there are some emotional outbursts which it perfectly alright to express, but have little merit in helping people understand the world. Just because a lot of people believe something doesn't mean it's helpful to report when there's no basis in reality.

@RogueLoner If he actually said that, yes i do.
That's why Fox claims it's entertainment, not news.
It actually said that in court!!

This sounds horrible when taken at face value.
I can also potentially see a point if this is what he meant.
What if the news is reporting on ISIS tourturing innocent locals. While it is important to tell the entire story, is really important to give equal time to the point of view of theterrorists all in the name of fairness?
I don't think so.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@RogueLoner I didn't say to not present both sides I also clearly said that the whole story should be told but no to give a crazy terrorist group equal time to spout their murderous views isin't necessary in order to tell the whole story and may do more harm than good.
I'm not a fan of the news media today but its not necessary to give " equal time" to everyone.
This is why sometimes they refuse to read the manifestos of mass murderers

@RogueLoner I duuno you are seeing a bit more of a hidden agenda of supressian than I am.
The media is ruled by advert dollars so this is the source of the problem.
I don't think that there is a massive hidden agenda to disallow facts.
In general the news is merely entertainment and most people aren't really that interested in total truth.
The market will demand what the masses want and if its the truth then we would have had it.
