He might of just been trying to lie to impress you. It's so common that it is a trope now.

I've gotten to the point in my life I just accept people will lie to me and I don't usually push the issue too much so long as what they are doing isn't murder or rape related. It has to be a really high bar to get me to react. It's a facet of human nature.
