Pro: It connects us with people and viewpoints we might not have otherwise encountered.
Con: Those people and viewpoints can influence us in terribly negative ways.

Pro: Not all influence is negative.
Con: It’s sometimes difficult to find the positive.
@FreakLikeMe Been watching Three's Company again?
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@FreakLikeMe True but I guess we have to be resolute in what we believe unless proven otherwise.

Anything you choose to believe, you can find several websites to back you up.
So we now have 437 versions of reality and everyone lives in their own preferred one.
No longer any solid foundation of truths for everyone to build society on.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@robingoodfellow So true unfortunately.👍
Magenta · F
More bad than good.

It may have been a good idea to begin with and I do so love the research aspect. Mostly now it's abused and a waste of precious time. It's intangible. It's not really living. It's separating us from nature, etc.. Many studies have shown it's causing mental and emotional problems, especially in the young (teens, etc.).

Whether we like her or not, she speaks truth.

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Magenta To some extent I agree with most of that.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
On balance probably bad.

There was a time when the world was ruled by factual information.

These facts were recorded in books that couldn't be defamed or misinterpreted.

You might not have liked the information.
But you couldn't question it.
Thus it was taught in our educational establishments.
Thus everyone knew the facts on any subject simply by reading a book.

Fast forward to modern times and look at how information has been manipulated and abused by cheats; thieves and liars to gain nothing but an alternate false reality that pitches one generation against another to leave the next generation blind to whatever truth there is in the world.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Picklebobble2 Yes there’s no doubt it’s had an affect there.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Primnproper I love the idea of e-mail.
The fact that communication between family and friends is so much quicker today than it's ever been.
And you can send 'a day out with the kids' complete with photos and Granny and Grandad in Australia can see them instantly rather than wait three weeks for the same to arrive by mail.
So it's not all bad.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Picklebobble2 very true, for keeping in touch with loved ones and friends afar it has been amazing..
Alyosha · 31-35, M
Once everyone migrated online, the quality of internet connections/communications dropped massively. The internet used to be for geeks and nerds, an above-average slice of the populace. Now it's for everyone, and serves as more proof that democratization means an increase in incompetence.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Alyosha A good point. 👍
Nimbus · M
Pros: We can rely on it, mostly.
Cons: We rely on it, mostly.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Nimbus very true, maybe we rely on it too much sometimes.
Nimbus · M
@Primnproper I think so, lazy too but I guess the positives outweigh the negatives and anyway we don't have much say in the matter overall.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Nimbus No we don’t.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Meeting people from around the world is a plus.
Finding info quickly another plus.

Becoming so addicted you can't function without online social interaction,in my mind ,is a negative impact as is expecting instant grafication in all areas of life.

False news and gross misinformation is another negative impact.
Listing to YouTube influencers even when they give out illogical and irrational advice ,would again be a negative impact.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Justmeraeagain yes i agree with all you've said there, very much so..
Both. We’re able to exchange and find information so much easier now. Communicate over great distances is easier and cheaper.

The bad is that false information is also easier to spread, harmful content gets to children, and screens mess up our eyes after a while.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Colonelmustardseed all very valid points.👍
exexec · 70-79, C
It has been a good addition to my life. My hobby is genealogy, and the Internet has given me access to information I would never have seen by simply digging in paper documents. Plus, I have met some people that have been great additions to my life.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@exexec Glad it has had a positive affect on your life.
Ramrod · 46-50, M
I would say mostly good,so helpful in so many ways,can you imagine if the internet was gone tomorrow ???
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Ramrod yes I’m very guilty of that and all my playlists of different genres.
Ramrod · 46-50, M
@Primnproper Yes,rock,blues,country,plus the things i have learned from videos,if it was gone tomorrow i would be pissed. lol
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Ramrod Definitely understand..
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
The internet is a tool. Like electricity. Radio TV or the printing press. Thats all...😷
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@whowasthatmaskedman It is but unfortunately any tools can be misused.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Primnproper Sadly Yes. Which says a lot about the people using them..😷
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@whowasthatmaskedman Indeed it does..
HumanEarth · F
It destroyed it by giving the government total control over us. The USA PATRIOT Act in 2001 was a big step in killing Americans freedoms.

It gave power to smart smart phones, smart TV, smart speakers, smart refrigerators, smart cars, smart watches and so much more.

They all have power to listen, track, turn on cameras, access to locations, contacts and more. And they don't even need your permission.

E-mail not safe, voice mail not safe

Privacy has gone out the window in 1995
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@HumanEarth yeah it does kind of feel like that here in the UK as well.
HumanEarth · F
Screw up world isn't it and yet we as citizens keep letting this happen to us. Wanna know why we don't stop it, because its a human toxic personality trait
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@HumanEarth It seems so..
Barny52 · 56-60, M
Its a good tool but its made everyone hate each other

@Primnproper LOL I thought we were still in the other thread. Yes, hatred has gotten more streamlined through the internet, back in the day I knew several students in one bbs that got expelled from their universities that tried to get all trollish.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@NativePortlander1970 Easily done..I don’t like the hatred and if I see bullying it grieves me and I will step in.
Houdini · 56-60, M
Well for me it’s been pretty good. It’s helped me with a lot of my issues
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Houdini You do just fine when we chat my friend..🤗 I have seen you come out of yourself here more which is great!👍
Houdini · 56-60, M
@Primnproper thank you
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Houdini 🤗
twistedrope · 26-30, M
Infinitely good. Without the internet we probably wouldn't have higher disk capacities beyond blue-rays. And I need my large capacity hard drives for my movies, games and books c:
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@twistedrope That may be so but there’s still some pitfalls.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
I like Google for searching, and social media. But a lot of good content is behind a paywall.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@JoyfulSilence It has its uses..
Markmywurdz · 56-60, M
I look on it as a real-life version of the Krell machine from Forbidden Planet. In the film, the alien race that made the machine believed it would give them almost unlimited creative powers. Instead it allowed their subconscious anger and hatred to destroy them.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Markmywurdz You’re right very similar! 😁
MiraRoss · 31-35, F
It's a good tool for businesses and things like that but it's made people lazy and bullying is horrible because of it social media is so bad these days
MiraRoss · 31-35, F
@Primnproper life is so short I don't get why people want to hurt others. I know that behind ever bully is a scared kid just wanting love or they are jealous of another but just why
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@MiraRoss They’re missing something from their lives that causes them to hit out.
MiraRoss · 31-35, F
@Primnproper yes they are for sure
Busybee333 · 31-35, F
Both - depends on how it is used.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Busybee333 Agreed.👍
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
Both. It's use determines that.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Nitedoc Absolutely right.👍
Both but ultimately good.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Spoiledbrat That's a fair view.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I say it has been good
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
The internet is very similar to the printing press. It is overthrowing established orders and established orders aren't taking it kindly.
Bowenw · 61-69, M
It has put information at our finger tips, but too much in some cases, for example kids and porn.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Bowenw Also a good point.👍
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
All of humanities knowledge at your fingertips ? Good thing .
Mentally ill people expressing mentally ill opinions ? Bad thing. Haha
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Mixed blessing.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@uncalled4 Yes that’s how I feel.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@uncalled4 Like everything else.

@NativePortlander1970 He was very lucky then.👍
@Primnproper He made excellent money as a debugger, but sadly my grandmother loved to spend it and give to her side of the family.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@NativePortlander1970 That’s women for ya!😁
