Is it wrong to take advantage of charity?

I've been eating at the homeless shelter for sometime now and I could never get full, so i've started walking the half mile up the street to another soup kitchen and eating there also. I don't have any food stamps or any other government support so it doesn't feel like i'm taking advantage of the system. i just don't want to have to go hungry while I try and figure my life out and get back on my feet.

It is not wrong at all. I volunteer at the Food Bank, and we want everybody who needs even a little bit of help to use our charity.

@exexec You are a good person for volunteering the scariest part of being homeless is the not knowing how to get food. I was homeless for a while before i even went to a shelter and ate at the shelter. The first shelter that I was at it was better to live off the streets to be honest. The streets were safer and more clean, but the place that i'm at now is clean and the staff are nice and helpful.

@Lostpoet I hope you get the help you need and can stay safe!

@exexec Thank you

I wouldn't say you were taking the piss. Do you have foodbanks where you are? That's what they're there for.

It would be honourable to just be honest and say youre just hard up and not homeless but it's not essential I guess.

@Matt85 I don't have any ID, but i'm in the process of getting my drivers license back..

That isn’t taking advantage of charity, that’s using it as it’s intended
Casheyane · F
If you're just getting what you need, then no. That is not what we call taking advantage.
Jessmari · 41-45
You have to what you have to do. You shouldn't be faulted for that. It's alot better than finding you collapsed on the sidewalk while you are running around figuring things out.
deadgerbil · 22-25
No. But once you do get back on you feet, maybe donate a lot to those shelters to return the favor
Lostpoet · M
@deadgerbil I plan on doing that I could donate my time and volunteer right now, but I don't know how to do that, or if they even let people that are staying there do that.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
@Lostpoet Simply ask them. Most charities need manpower as badly as financing.
Lostpoet · M
@ineedadrink It'll be awkward though, but I probably will do it in a couple of days.

If you can't afford to eat any other way then you are exactly the kind of person that soup kitchens and the like were set up for so you aren't 'taking advantage'.
Lilliesandlight · 41-45, F
So sorry you are struggling. God bless you
Lilliesandlight · 41-45, F
@Lostpoet that's awesome, I'm glad. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. If you need to vent I'm a good listener 🙂
Lostpoet · M
@Lilliesandlight Thank you. I feel like i've said a lot online already and it feels like it just comes back to haunt me. I'll message you sometime though if you're ok with that.
Lilliesandlight · 41-45, F
@Lostpoet sure go ahead ☺️

You are hungry, this is why they exist. Take comfort and remind yourself that you will someday pay this forward once you are able.
I don’t see that as taking advantage. That’s why soup kitchens exist, to feed people who are hungry.
Iwillwait · M
You're not taking advantage, you're doing what you need to do, to be fed.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
I don't think so. I mean it's there for anyone with low income
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
You shouldn’t go hungry…. that could take a toll on your health. Some people need more calories than others due to a faster metabolism and other factors
Lostpoet · M
@cherokeepatti I went from 165 to 153 in like two weeks. Maybe i shouldn't be homeless and still go to the gym.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Lostpoet you can shower at the gym and exercise is good for you
bookerdana · M
Simple answer,if you need it ,make use of it..pay it forward later
Not at all, if you need it. What the government considers eligible is often past the point of destitution.

Its for people who i hungry i see no problem
