How Couples Met

[media=https://youtu.be/ArlY8EKc8Vw?t=2]
A two-minute video timeline comparing the different ways couples met, from 1930 to 2024.

The most interesting part to me is the rapid rise of couples meeting online in the 21st century. That’s not too surprising, but the percentage of couples meeting this way today is astounding, nonetheless.

The creator of the video cites research from Stanford University and national surveys as the main sources of data.

Also, the music used in the video (“Funky Disco”) is pretty good.

@OldMan70 Really???? Wow. Congrats!
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@OldMan70 Happy to hear that. Congratulations.
@Rutterman but I miss sitting out on the porch and visiting with neighbors like the old times. Those were precious times and now no one does it, only maybe a few that live up in the mountains or something.

@LadyGrace It's sad those days are mostly gone now.
@Rutterman Yes.

My first wife was a friend of my older sister. We dated briefly in hs and it didn’t work. We met up at a party I threw in the summer in college and it did work.

I’ve also dated someone that worked for me and dated someone that’s a friend from EP.

I’m currently married to a woman I met on Match. We dated for 5 years prior to getting married last year.

@Adogslife Glad to hear online dating worked for you. Congratulations on your marriage.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@Rutterman Ty. Appreciated 🙏🏻👍🏻
Met my gf online. And my former fiancée. And one of my ex wives. And probably the last 20 or so people I dated. Dating coworkers never ended well for me. 😂
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@MayorOfCrushtown Many of the people I know have a similar history of meeting their partners online. It went well for some of them. For others, not so much.
@Rutterman you definitely meet a lot of “interesting” people. 😂😂😂

The drastic shift in the other ways (family, friends, etc) once online takes off is shocking.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@SW-User It really is.

Wow very interesting.
And interesting that co-workers started jumping in the '60's and then waning in the 2,000's.
I'd say 90% of my relationships were co-workers. I've never done online dating and I hear it's a nightmare 😬
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Lilymoon Yeah, same for me. The majority of my relationships have been with co-workers or former co-workers. I've never done online dating either. It really doesn't appeal to me.
ChampagneOnIce · 51-55, F
Wow. Cool to see the data shift. I was surprised how many couples met as coworkers. I never dated anyone I worked with - too complicated. 😄 Don’t sh!t where you eat. (Gross, I know. I don’t like the crudeness of the saying, but I agree with it.)
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@ChampagneOnIce Same. Can't imagine dating someone I work with.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@ChampagneOnIce In my case, the relationships were either with people who worked in other departments, or people I only started dating after they moved on to other places of employment.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I met my wife, now ex-wife, at work. We were both young RN's.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Nitedoc I also met my ex-wife at work.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Rutterman I bet that happens fairly often. I can think of a few couples who met at work.
Really cool, visually enlightening post!
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Ghostinthemachine All credit must go to the person who made the video. I also think it's cool and visually enlightening.
@Rutterman and yes, the music keeps it moving

The times they are a changin…
exexec · 70-79, C
We met at the church youth group, and it's not surprising to see that percentage drop.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@exexec No, not surprising at all.
SW-User
That is interesting
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@SW-User I think so too.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Wow! Crazy how things changed over time.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 Yes. It's pretty remarkable.
